Our conference in Kyoto is now over.
► This is our own detailed programme ► and these are the abstracts of presentations and biographies of our presenters
► We have produced this guide to city museums across Japan.
You will see that two of our sessions were with ASPAC, ICOM's regional alliance of Asian Pacific countries, and with DEMIST, ICOM's international committee for historic house museums.
The keynote speakers at the ICOM conference, in which of course CAMOC took part included Kengo Kuma, architect of the Scottish arm of London's Victoria and Albert Museum; the Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang whose many prizes include the Golden Lion at the 1999 Venice Biennale; and the great Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado who is currently working on a project about the Amazonian rain forest and its indigenous people.
Tours
Our colleague Jenny Chiu has organised a tour of the Museum of Kyoto and the area around it.
Then there's Tokyo. Jenny organised a post conference tour of Tokyo, Japan's capital, the world's largest city and home to this year's world rugby cup. We have the details here in both ► Japanese and English◀︎
See also our Facebook entry where we have more information about the conference.
Kyoto is rather more than a tourist attraction. Monocle magazine, which is much involved in reporting on cities world-wide, rates Kyoto among the best places in which to live (edition 125 July/August 2019). That's based on 60 metrics, including items such as the cost of living, public transport, safety, green spaces, the average working week, the population age range, and of course culture, on which it scores heavily. Tourism has done much to raise the economy, but as in so many cities, from Venice to Barcelona, it has been something of a curse. That said, this is a good guide to Kyoto
The Mayor is Daisaku Kadokawa. He has led some successful campaigns such as reducing energy use. Under his leadership Kyoto is making efforts to protect its wooden townhouses with rules which demand that developers give city hall first chance to prevent historic buildings being pulled down, an initiative which could be copied in so many other cities.
