Nicola Johnson, writing in UNESCO’s Museum International in 1995, said this:"The best city museums act as a starting point for the discovery of the city, which can lead people to look with fresh, more informed and tolerant eyes at the richness of the present urban environment and to imagine beyond it to past and possible future histories". Those sentiments underlay the objective of our workshop in Lisbon.
In the end our meeting in Lisbon was something more than a workshop, more like a conference. We looked at what was happening in city museums - new ideas, plans for the future, new ways of understanding the city... We discussed the ICOM project on a new definition of museums, and heard about collaboration between ICOM and the OECD which has produced a guide on maximising the impact of culture on local economic and social development. The full guide is available online.
There is more about our meeting in the September issue of our Review. Our chair, Joana Monteiro can also be seen on Youtube: "What Links Between Cities and Museums?"
