Hana Podolská, a Czech Fashion Legend
until 19 May 2019
Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague
Address: 17. listopadu 2, 110 00 Prague 1, Czech Republic
“The Hanna Podolská couture house” in Prague was the best-known and most popular fashion house in Czech society between the two world wars. Its successes were thanks to Podolská high-quality tailoring and remarkable creativity, based on a sound knowledge of the latest Paris fashion trends while taking into account Czech taste. It survived the German occupation and the difficult postwar years, but in 1948, shortly after the Communist takeover, it was nationalized. As the state-run enterprise called “Eva Fashion House” it existed until 1991. The name Hana Podolská (1880–1972), however, lives on in the collective consciousness of the Czechs as a legend of interwar elegance and as an example of a spirited, enterprising, and exceptionally capable woman.
The exhibition brings the visitor into the atmosphere of the Czechoslovak First Republic, presenting more than 50 original models and a number of accessories, film footage, photographs, and other documents.
