Other Board Members
My candidature as an ICOM ICEE member with an international background in Exhibition development and design serves to strengthen representation in various ICEE forums and activities where ICOM ICEE is present and seeks to establish presence. A re-activation of activities of exhibition exchange in Africa has never found a better period than what it holds now and in the future. There are several institutions and individuals in Africa that can benefit through exchange of ideas and in liaison with the professional disposition of ICEE membership.
Within the stipulated period in office (2010 - 2013), creation of ICEE presence should be felt through an already existing and growing network of professionals in Africa in partnership with other colleagues internationally. This will open up untapped frontiers, which will enable the holding of activities in African museums and related ICOM ICEE institutions in fostering ICOM's strategic plans.
Marlies Kleiterp (1963) is Head of Exhibitions at the Hermitage Amsterdam and De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Graduated at Leiden University as a classical archaeologist in 1988, she worked at the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden (Netherlands) for 15 years, eventually as Director of Exhibitions and Deputy Director of the museum. During this time she organised many international exhibitions, of which Pharao’s of the Sun was the most important. Several exhibitions from own collections were put together under her supervision that travelled around the world to Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. She joined the management team of the Hermitage Amsterdam / De Nieuwe Kerk in 2005, and has been responsible for the exhibitions at both institutions since.
Although two separate museums, the Hermitage Amsterdam and De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam are closely connected. All staff members are being employed by the ‘Stichting Producties De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam and the Hermitage Amsterdam’. This foundation organises exhibitions at the request of both bodies (not having own collections). The Hermitage as well as De Nieuwe Kerk has earned a place of their own with the national and international museum world. The Hermitage Amsterdam has an agreement with the Russian government to produce exhibitions together with the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, and other Russian museums in the future. The Hermitage Amsterdam is an independent and autonomous legal entity with its own money flows and its own objectives.
On June 19th 2009 the Hermitage Amsterdam opened its museum to the world, and Marlies has taken part in the developing of this new museum (practical & organisation wise) as well as the grand opening exhibition At the Russian Court. De Nieuwe Kerk is also an independent and autonomous legal entity with its own money flows and objectives. De Nieuwe Kerk has a 30 years experience with setting up international exhibitions, focussing on foreign countries, peoples and world religions. Some recent examples (since 2015) are: Istanbul, Hidden Afghanistan, Oman, and a great exhibition on the Islamic art of the Khalili Collections is being organised at the moment. For 2011 an exhibition on Judaism is being organised together with the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam and the year after an exhibition on Native Americans, together with US guest curator David Penney.
In reference to the membership of ICEE Marlies can contribute with her experience of organising international exhibitions, world wide contacts and her strong desire to look for partners ships. It is her believe that partner ships for exhibitions, either being put together by the own institute, or being taken over from third parties, is essential and inspiring. Sharing practical issues is important to receive new ideas, as well as understanding other parties. With regard to a membership of the board of ICCE her personal input will be closely connected to her national and international experience. A strong feeling of responsibility and wish to connect people as well as a creative mind will contribute to realise meetings and topics to discuss.
